چکیده

ardiovascular risk factors are identifiable in childhood and are predictive of adulthood risk for coronary artery disease.1 Autopsy studies of youths have established a strong association between cardiovascular risk factors and early stages of coronary atherosclerosis.2 Longitudinal observation studies have shown that coronary heart disease (CHD) risk factors measured in adolescence predict markers of atherosclerosis measured by noninvasive methods. The Muscatine Study,3 the Bogalusa Heart Study4 and the Cardiovascular Risk in Young Finn Study5 showed that the CHD risk factors, including elevated low-density lipoprotein (LDL)-cholesterol concentration, predicted carotid artery intima-media thickness (CA-IMT) measured 15–20 years later.

Sex differences in the developmental origins of cardiovascular disease.

The Developmental Origins of Health and Disease (DOHaD) proposes that adverse events during early life program an increased risk for cardiovascular disease. Experimental models provide proof of concept but also indicate that insults during early life program sex differences in adult blood pressure and cardiovascular risk. This review will highlight the potential mechanisms that contribute to th...

Developmental Programming of Hypertension

Epidemiological studies indicate that the origins of high blood pressure initiates in fetal life. Recent reviews highlight a role for numerous factors in the pathogenesis of the developmental programming of hypertension including epigenetic processes, glucocorticoids, reduced nephron number, activation of the sympathetic nervous system, and the renin–angiotensin system (RAS) and endothelial dys...

Epigenetic mechanisms in heart development and disease.

Suboptimal intrauterine development has been linked to predisposition to cardiovascular disease in adulthood, a concept termed 'developmental origins of health and disease'. Although the exact mechanisms underlying this developmental programming are unknown, a growing body of evidence supports the involvement of epigenetic regulation. Epigenetic mechanisms such as DNA methylation, histone modif...

Perinatal Programming of Childhood Asthma: Early Fetal Size, Growth Trajectory during Infancy, and Childhood Asthma Outcomes

The "fetal origins hypothesis" or concept of "developmental programming" suggests that faltering fetal growth and subsequent catch-up growth are implicated in the aetiology of cardiovascular disease. Associations between reduced birth weight, rapid postnatal weight gain, and asthma suggest that there are fetal origins to respiratory disease. The present paper first summarises the literature rel...

Developmental processes and the induction of cardiovascular function: conceptual aspects.

The epidemiological basis of the developmental origins of disease concept is now widely accepted. The current impetus in research concerns establishing the underlying mechanisms. We discuss the wider biological nature of the phenomenon, with particular reference to 'maternal effects', the processes observed in many species by which the mother can induce phenotypic effects in her offspring. Anim...

Developmental origins of the metabolic syndrome: prediction, plasticity, and programming.

The "fetal" or "early" origins of adult disease hypothesis was originally put forward by David Barker and colleagues and stated that environmental factors, particularly nutrition, act in early life to program the risks for adverse health outcomes in adult life. This hypothesis has been supported by a worldwide series of epidemiological studies that have provided evidence for the association bet...
